Detention Alternatives

Each year, over 300,000 young people are detained in juvenile facilities in the United States.  The typical stay is brief - about 20 days - but even short stays can negatively impact the outcomes of that youth.  Numerous studies conducted over the years show that detention disrupts schooling, impacts mental health, increases the likelihood of formal charges, and decreases outcomes like high school graduation employment.  Detention is also expensive with the average stay of detention being about $200 per night per youth.
