Nebraska Educational Television interviewed Debora Denny, Director of the Office of Dispute Resolution (ODR) and Alisha Jimenez, ODR’s Restorative Justice Program Analyst on March 22, 2018 regarding ODR’s restorative justice initiative, Victim Youth Conferencing (VYC). VYC was piloted in the 3rd, 4th, and 12th judicial districts in partnership with the ODR-approved mediation centers serving those districts, and it had outstanding results. Out of the 70 youth receiving a VYC, 93% resulted in a reparations agreement, with 85% successfully fulfilled by the youth, and 5 % in progress. Recidivism rates were significantly low; only 13% of youth were involved in a subsequent offense during the following year. The interview by NET’s Bill Kelly on Speaking of Nebraska showcased the Victim Youth Conferencing initiative and the three-year statewide enhancement project now underway in all 12 judicial districts.
