On July 11, 2014, the Clerk of the Nebraska Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Lanet Asmussen, will resign her office.  On that same day, Deputy Clerk, Jan Culver, will retire.

“My work with the courts the past 34 years has been both challenging and rewarding,” said Asmussen.  “I feel now is the appropriate time to move on to new personal goals.”

Asmussen began her career with the Judicial Branch in November 1979 as Administrative Assistant to Chief Justice Norman Krivosha. She became Clerk of the Court in 1987. Culver was initially hired in November 1977 to work with bar admissions and the Reporter of Decisions. In 1982 she was appointed Deputy Clerk.  Together Asmussen and Culver have dedicated their careers to the organization and functioning of the Nebraska Supreme Court. Both have worked diligently to serve the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, as well as the legal community and the public.

In 1991 the Clerk of the Supreme Court added the Nebraska Court of Appeals to their administrative services. Most recently, their office has undertaken a technology-based project to provide public records in all cases in an online format, similar to that of the online trial court recordkeeping system. Although the project will not be complete by the time of their retirements, the infrastructure will have been established and well on its way to a public unveiling.

“I am grateful for the support of both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals during my years of service.  I now look forward to a new chapter of my life which will include travel and leisure time with my husband,” remarked Culver.  “I take great pride in my years of service to the Courts and the State of Nebraska.”

A reception honoring Asmussen and Culver will be held in the Supreme Court Lawyer’s Room of the Nebraska State Capitol on July 2, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
