I became a lawyer late in life, after a 20 yr.career in community mental health. In my first year of law school the limits of the adversarial system became very apparent to me and I developed an interest in alternative dispute resolution processes. In my Parenting Act experience so far, I note that the necessary interactional skill set and emotional content of a Parenting Act mediation is remarkably similar to group or couples therapy. The mediator's neutrality, therapist's non-judgmental positive regard, reflection, modeling, supportive feedback, etc. are similar strategies for facilitating empowerment and constructive self directed behavior in both roles.
