Information for Nebraska Journalists Regarding Cameras in Courtrooms

The Expanded Media rule has been amended in two important ways:

  1. Reporters are now allowed to file one request to follow a full case within the specified court (meaning you need to refile when the case moves from county court to district court).
  2. Reporters may use electronic devices in the courtroom for notetaking purposes without prior permission of the court. Nothing can be shared or transmitted; recordings are only for the individual reporter to verify accuracy of a story.

PLEASE READ changes to the rule: https://supremecourt.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/rule_amendments_proposed/6-2001etseq.4comment.pdf  along with the full rule: https://supremecourt.nebraska.gov/supreme-court-rules/chapter-6-trial-courts/article-20-rules-expanded-news-media-coverage-nebraska

The request form (AD 1:01 Rev: 07/2020) has also changed.

  1. Reporters are asked to write down the beginning date of the trial/hearing along with the case number and judge followed by the standard information on equipment.
  2. Based on recent experiences with national news outlets, reporters are asked questions about tweeting/blogging, live streaming and timing of gavel-to-gavel coverage

Please read and use AD 1:01, rev. 07/2020: REQUEST AND NOTICE FOR EXPANDED NEWS MEDIA COVERAGE OF PROCEEDINGS: https://supremecourt.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/AD-1-01.pdf

If managers have saved the original version of the request form to their desktop, please replace it with the July revision at the link above.
