Nebraska Supreme Court to Hold Court Session at Boys Town High School

As part of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s ongoing outreach and education efforts, Supreme Court Justices will hold oral arguments at Boys Town High School Music Hall on March 28, 2019, at 1:15 p.m.

This marks the first time that the Supreme Court has held arguments on Boys Town's campus. The visit is part of a continuing effort by the Nebraska Supreme Court and the legal community to raise awareness of court processes and the importance of civics education to American society.

“It is critical that our students understand the workings of our democratic institutions and have confidence in our court system,” said Chief Justice Mike Heavican. “The Court looks forward to the Boys Town visit and a learning experience for all involved in the session.”

Boys Town Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Bob Reznicek, noted, “The Boys Town Schools are honored to host the Nebraska Supreme Court on our campus. This event will provide our students and staff with a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Thursday's argument at Boys Town will follow the Supreme Court’s oral argument session at the Creighton University School of Law from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

For over 30 years, the Supreme Court has traveled annually to each of Nebraska’s law schools for the purpose of making the Court’s business accessible to students on their campuses. Justices spend time after argument sessions talking to students about the appellate process and career opportunities as lawyers. Cases are selected to demonstrate the variety of legal arguments that face the court system on a regular basis.

According to Social Studies Department Chairperson, John English, “We are honored and excited that Boys Town was chosen to host the Nebraska Supreme Court.  We are also very grateful to essentially have a field trip come to us.  Hopefully our students will grasp the magnitude of the event and use it as an opportunity to connect real-life examples with what they have learned in class.”

All argument sessions, whether held at the Supreme Court courtroom or outside of the State Capitol, are open to the public. NET Television will livestream both the 9:30 a.m. arguments at Creighton and the 1:15 p.m. argument at Boys Town as part of its coverage, which can be viewed online at NET's Website: www.netnebraska.org/publicmedia/capitol.html (Link will appear as: Nebraska Supreme Court Arguments).
