Deb VanDyke-Ries joins the Court Improvement team as a Project Specialist. Deb brings more than 10 years’ experience working in juvenile court as Director and Volunteer Coordinator at CASA for Lancaster County as well as Interim Director for the Nebraska CASA Association. During her tenure at CASA, Deb was a member of the Lancaster County Through the Eyes of the Child team, 1184 team, National Adoption Day Committee and the Nebraska Supreme Commission on Children in the Court - Education sub-committee. As a CASA volunteer, Deb provided advocacy for nine children in four separate juvenile court cases.

Deb received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska, minoring in Political Science. The University of Kansas is where she received her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Deb has been an adjunct professor of social work at Nebraska Wesleyan University and supervised numerous students from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Southeast Community College. Most recently she was a member of the SCC Advisory Board for Health and Human Services.

Deb and her husband, Paul, are the very proud parents of three children. As adoptive parents, they received the Angels in Adoption Award from Senator Chuck Hagel in 2008. When Deb is not attending kid’s activities, she enjoys reading, spending time outside gardening, camping, music and playing with dogs, Casey and Coco, and cat, Twist.

Mary Ann joins the Court Improvement Project as a Project Specialist. Mary Ann grew up in Lincoln and received her Bachelor of Arts in French with minors in English and Art History from UNL. While a student and after graduation, she worked as a direct care staff at CEDARS Youth Services in their program for pregnant and parenting teens. Mary Ann spent a year in Paris teaching English conversation at a high school and then went to law school at Hofstra in Long Island, New York. While at Hofstra, she focused on child advocacy, participating in a clinic where she represented child clients in abuse and neglect cases.

After law school, Mary Ann worked for three years as an attorney for the child at New York City Legal Aid in the Juvenile Rights Practice. There, she represented young people in all aspects of their cases, including abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, custody and visitation actions, status offenses, and juvenile delinquency proceedings for crossover youth. Mary Ann returned to Nebraska in 2014. She worked most recently as the Economic Justice Staff Attorney at Nebraska Appleseed, focusing on ensuring low-income Nebraskans have access to sustainable pathways out of poverty. Mary Ann is admitted to practice law in Nebraska and New York.

Matt joins the Court Improvement Project as a Project Specialist. Originally from North Carolina, Matt holds a B.S. in Political Science from Northeastern University and J.D. from Rutgers School of Law. While in Massachusetts, Matt served two years as an Americorps VISTA with the City of Boston’s Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign as Youth Program Coordinator and then worked for two additional years as the Campaign’s Training and Volunteer Coordinator. At Rutgers, Matt participated in the Children’s Justice Clinic, Marshall-Brennan fellowship, South Jersey Education Reentry Project, and IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Prior to his time with CIP, Matt clerked for the Honorable Pedro J. Jimenez, Jr., J.S.C. of the New Jersey Superior Court, Mercer Vicinage – Criminal Part in Trenton, New Jersey.

Previous positions in both design and web have enabled Kelly to apply her vocational skills with such large name clients like Complete Nutrition, Scooters Coffee, HobbyTown USA, and The University of Nebraska-Lincoln at both EdMedia and the Center on Children, Family, and the Law. Now as part of the Nebraska Court Improvement Project she continues to bring useful information to those in the child welfare and Juvenlie Justice sector.
