In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Nebraska Press Association, Chief Justice Mike Heavican presented a plaque to the Association on behalf of the Bar Foundation Bench Media Committee, of which he is the chairperson. Mark Rhoades, of the Enterprise Group in Blair, and John Edgecombe with the Geneva Signal/Hebron Journal-Register accepted the plaque as a symbol of appreciation during the Association banquet on April 14, 2023. Both families have long histories in Nebraska newspapers, with six and five generations respectively.

During his remarks, Heavican praised the media for their important role in promoting transparency and accountability in the legal system. He thanked reporters and news outlet owners for their coverage of court proceedings, judicial appointments, and legal reforms, which has helped educate the public about the inner workings of the courts and promote trust and confidence in the Judicial Branch.

Heavican emphasized that Nebraska's news reporters have always been key partners in promoting transparency and accountability in courts, not only in high-profile cases but also in educating the public on the day-to-day functioning of the legal system. He praised reporters for demystifying the legal process for the public and providing a window into courtrooms, allowing people to see how justice is served.

Heavican congratulated the Nebraska Press Association and their Executive Director, Dennis Derossett, for 150 years of dedication to accurate, meaningful reporting on behalf of the legal community.
