Guardian and Conservator Education

Guardian and Conservator Education

The Office of Public Guardian provides training, education, and support to individuals serving as guardians and/or conservators. The course, Becoming a Guardian and/or Conservator, is required unless specifically waived by the Court and must be completed within three months of the guardian/conservator's appointment. Neb. Rev. Stat. § 30-2627 (D). The course content, approved by the Nebraska Supreme Court, provides detailed information for those serving as guardian or conservator. The course is available in two formats, online and in-person. The online course is heavily encouraged for its lower cost and convenience to the new guardian/conservator.

Online course participants may have their individual questions answered by calling the Office of Public Guardian and requesting to speak with an Associate Public Guardian upon completion of the course. Additional resources are also available for guardians/conservators on our Resources page, including links to local, state, and national resources along with webinars covering key topics.

Online Class

The online course is highly recommended, as it provides the greatest flexibility and access to the course information, while also being the least expensive option. The course is offered in English and Spanish.

  • Each person who registers for the online class will need their own email address. No exceptions.
  • Co-guardians/co-conservators must register and pay separately using unique email addresses. No exceptions.
  • Law firms who register their clients will need to use the client's email address. No exceptions.
  • Users should double check that the email address is correct before completing the registration. Users should also keep their login credentials in a safe place. The Office of Public Guardian will not be able to reset passwords. Use the "forgot password?" feature.
  • Upon successful registration and payment, users will be given immediate access to the course.
  • Upon completion of the course, users may download and/or print their Certificate of Completion. It is the user’s responsibility to file the certificate with the court, and/or to provide it to their attorney for filing. The Office of Public Guardian will not be able to replace a lost Certificate of Completion. Users will need to login again to generate another copy.

In-Person Class

In-person classes are scheduled across the state on a rotating basis. Participants must be registered and paid in order to be admitted into the class. Registration will close 1 week prior to the class date. Only the registered individual will be allowed to attend the training. Please do not register and pay for the class more than once. Co-guardians and/or co-conservators must register and pay separately. No guests or children are allowed to attend with the registered individual. NO EXCEPTIONS.

All accommodation/interpretation requests must be made by phone to 402.471.2862. At this time, regularly scheduled interpretation is not available, but can be requested on a case-by-case basis. Please call to request interpretation before registering to allow time for the request to go through the Language Access process. Interpreter availability may be limited. Participants who would like to bring their own interpreter are able to do so, but must call and request permission due to space limitations in the classroom set forth by the venues. After arrangements are made with OPG staff, please be sure to note the interpretation arrangements in the Accommodations section of the registration form.

After registration, a payment confirmation will be sent via email. Registration closes when the class is full, or one week prior to the class date. After registration closes, registrants will receive an email with the class location details, course materials, and any venue-required information.
