County Court Judge Edward Steenburg to Retire Late February
Judge of the County Court, 11th Judicial District, Edward D. Steenburg, is retiring February 28, 2025.
In his retirement announcement to the Governor, Steenburg wrote, “It has been my honor to serve the State of Nebraska and the residents of the 11th Judicial District for the past 21 years. It has also been a privilege to work with the county judges serving the State of Nebraska.” He continued, “I have been blessed to work with dedicated court employees in the counties I serve; they are an asset to the court system. I cannot thank them enough for the work they do each and every day.”
Steenburg was an early adopter of a “paperless” court having demonstrated his nearly paperless county court operation in Ogallala to the Chief Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court in 2016.
He has numerous community volunteer activities to his credit including serving as High School Mock Trial Project regional coordinator and volunteer judge. He is also lead judge for the Keith County “Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative.”
Steenburg is a Nebraska State Bar Foundation Fellow, selection of which is based on the integrity and character of the lawyer or judge selected. Fellows are accredited by colleagues as leaders of the legal profession who contribute to charitable works and community education. Membership recognizes established legal professionals dedicated to improving the administration of justice.
Steenburg has served the citizens of the 11th Judicial District from 2004 until his retirement this year. After taking the bench, he was retained in his position by area voters, most recently in 2020.
The first step in deciding whether Steenburg’s judicial position will need to be filled, is for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the Keith County court.
