Judge of the County Court, 2nd Judicial District, John F. Steinheider, is retiring December 31, 2018.

In his letter to the Governor and the Chief Justice, Steinheider wrote, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my 21 ½ years on the county court bench in the Second Judicial District.”  He continued, “I have had the good fortune to serve with very capable court staff personnel throughout my years on the bench and thank them for their commitment and service to the public.” Additionally, he thanked his fellow judges for their support and assistance throughout his career.

Steinheider is a former President of the Nebraska County Judges Association and has served on numerous judicial committees throughout his career.  He mentored new judges from across the state through Nebraska’s Judicial Branch Education program for several years, training many of the judges who are on the bench today. He is a Nebraska State Bar Foundation Fellow, an organization that selects members based on integrity, character, and dedication to improving the administration of justice.

Steinheider has served the citizens of Cass, Otoe and Sarpy counties (2nd Judicial District) from 1997 to his 2018 retirement. After taking the bench, Judge Steinheider was retained in his position by area voters, most recently in 2012.

The first step in replacing Judge Steinheider will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the district court for the 2nd Judicial District.
