Nebraska County Court Judge Kurt T. Rager, 6th Judicial District, announced his retirement effective July 31, 2020.

In his announcement letter to the Governor, Rager stated, “It has been my extreme privilege and honor to serve in this capacity [of county court judge] for 19 years.” He continued by thanking all with whom he worked and members of the legal community for making his job so enjoyable.

Rager took the county court bench in 2001, where he served several terms as Presiding Judge of the 6th Judicial District.

He has held several volunteer positions within the Nebraska County Judges Association, including the office of President from 2014 to 2015. He has been a member of the Judicial Education Committee, the County Court Forms Committee, the Probation Committee, and several ad hoc committees throughout his career.

As an alumnus of South Sioux City High School, Rager served as host when the Nebraska Supreme Court recently visited the high school, providing background information to students on the court system, greeting justices, and introducing the local legal community. 

The first step in replacing Judge Rager will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the county court bench.
