Court of Appeals Judge David Arterburn to Retire End of June
Judge of the Court of Appeals, Fourth Appellate Judicial District, David K. Arterburn, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2025.
In his letter to the Governor and the Chief Justice, Arterburn wrote, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the State of Nebraska for the past twenty years as a district court and appellate court judge.”
He expressed gratitude to the two governors who appointed him to the district and appellate benches and added, “I am further indebted to my colleagues with whom I have served within Sarpy, Otoe, and Cass Counties, as well as my fellow judges on the Court of Appeals.” He also thanked his staff, both past and present. He acknowledged “the many dedicated employees throughout the judicial branch who work hard every day to provide the citizens of Nebraska with the service they deserve.”
Arterburn is well known for his support of civics education, having actively participated in the Nebraska High School Mock Trial program through the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and the Court of Appeals College Campus Initiative, where he engaged in question-and-answer sessions with high school and college students.
He has served on numerous judicial committees for the Supreme Court and the Nebraska District Judges Association, as well as the Robert M. Spire Inns of Court.
Arterburn served as a judge of the District Court in the 2nd Judicial District (Sarpy, Cass, and Otoe counties) from 2005 to 2017, also serving as judge of the Sarpy County Adult Drug Court from 2008 to 2017. He was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 2017.
