District Court Judge Mark Johnson to Retire Mid-January

Judge of the District Court, 7th Judicial District, Mark Johnson, is retiring January 15, 2025.

In his retirement announcement to the Governor, Johnson wrote, “It has been a distinct honor and privilege to have served as district judge of the Seventh Judicial of the State of Nebraska since April 24, 2013.” He continued by thanking courthouse staff for their “help, humor and assistance every day in such a positive and professional manner” adding, “I would offer my many thanks to the attorneys who have appeared before me for their professionalism, wit, and wisdom.”

Throughout his service on the bench, Johnson participated in numerous judicial activities including service on the Nebraska Supreme Court Dispute Resolution Advisory Council and Judicial Education Committee for Nebraska District Judges Association. He also dedicated volunteer time to the Nebraska High School Mock Trial Competitions, teaching civics to the many high schoolers in the area.

Johnson served the citizens of Antelope, Cuming, Knox, Madison, Pierce, Stanton, and Wayne counties (7th Judicial District) from 2013 until his retirement this year. After taking the bench, he was retained in his position by area voters, most recently in 2022.

The first step in deciding whether Johnson’s judicial position will need to be filled, is for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the district court bench in the 7th Judicial District.
