District Court Judge Mary Gilbride to Retire April 30, 2018
Mary C. Gilbride, district court judge of the 5th Judicial District, is retiring effective April 30, 2018, after nearly 26 years on the bench.
In her retirement letter to the Chief Justice and the Governor, Judge Gilbride noted, “It has been the great privilege of my life to serve the people of Nebraska for almost 26 years, first as county judge for the Fifth Judicial District and, since 1998, as district judge for the Fifth District.” She added, “It has also been my privilege to work with the exemplary judges and staff of the Nebraska Judicial Branch. Our judicial branch is distinguished by its integrity, professionalism and dedication to providing services to the people of our great state.”
Judge Gilbride began her legal career as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Leslie Boslaugh in 1982. Following her clerkship, she joined Peter Kiewit Sons Inc. in Omaha as corporate counsel. In 1992 she was appointed to the county court bench in the 5th Judicial District until she moved to her present position on the district court bench in 1998.
Her volunteer and committee work includes extensive involvement in educating both new judges and the general public. She has been a frequent speaker regarding the role of the courts in society at local high schools since 1992. She has also served as a mentor to newly appointed judges and faculty for educational programs through the Judicial Branch’s Judicial Education program.
Gilbride is a Nebraska State Bar Foundation Fellow, an honor given by the legal community based on her integrity and character. Fellows are accredited by colleagues as leaders of the legal profession who contribute to the charitable and community education works of Foundation.
