The Nebraska Supreme Court announces that Ms. Maria Izabel Chávez will be sworn in as a certified Spanish court interpreter at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016, in the county courtroom of the Madison County Courthouse, Madison, Nebraska. The Honorable William B. Cassel, Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court, will administer the oath. With the addition of Chávez, there will be a total of 38 Spanish language court interpreters certified through the Nebraska Supreme Court’s program. The program, which began in 2000, is an ongoing effort of the Nebraska Judicial Branch to provide qualified interpreters for all appropriate court proceedings in both criminal and civil cases. Interpretation is frequently necessary not only for defendants, but also for victims, witnesses, parents of juveniles, and those interacting with probation. According to Justice William Cassel, Chair of the Nebraska Supreme Court Interpreter Advisory Committee, “Judicial proceedings require precise communication in spoken words. In order to assure that justice prevails, legal proceedings must be accurately and completely interpreted for non-English-speaking persons.” Nebraska is a member of the Council of Language Access Coordinators, which operates under the auspices of the National Center for State Courts to promote language access in courts, which works to create court interpreter certification exams, and promote other language services needed by courts nationwide.
