Judge of the Douglas County Separate Juvenile Court, Douglas F. Johnson, is retiring effective August 31, 2019.

In his announcement letter to the Governor, Johnson called attention to his court staff who routinely go “beyond the call of duty” spending countless hours in court-community related service projects like the Annual Reunification Day Picnic, National Adoption Day, and Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative. He noted, “For almost 26 years I have enjoyed the privilege of presiding in the Separate Juvenile Court of Douglas County, Nebraska. I am grateful to my dedicated staff: Mary Vlcek, Bailiff, Natalie Biede, Administrative Assistant, and Mary Kay Bocshee, Court Reporter.” He continued, “We have worked as a team whose primary purpose is to provide excellent services for children and families in the state’s busiest jurisdiction.”

Judge Johnson served as juvenile judge in Omaha from 1994 to 2019 and has led numerous judicial committees for the Nebraska Supreme Court, the Separate Juvenile Judges Association and national organizations.

After taking the bench on January 14, 1994, Judge Johnson was retained in his position by area voters, most recently in 2016.

The first step in replacing Johnson will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the Separate Juvenile Court.
