Nebraska State Court of Appeals to hold session at Peru State College

This is the court’s second visit to Peru State College.The Court of Appeals’ primary courtroom is in the State Capitol in Lincoln, but for the convenience of citizens, the Court of Appeals travels to other Nebraska cities to hear appeals. The Court of Appeals is divided into two panels consisting of three judges each. Both panels will meet at Peru State College.PSC President Dan Hanson said, “I want to thank Judge Moore and the Court of Appeals for selecting Peru State a second time for their proceedings. This represents a wonderful opportunity for area high school students and our own students to witness the judicial process firsthand. It is a privilege to serve as host.” Area high schools are invited to bring students to observe court proceedings. Those interested should contact the Office of Admissions at 800-742-4412 or admissions@peru.edu no later than Friday, April 9. Court will be in session in the PSC College Theater from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Observers should allow extra time for security clearance. Four cases will be heard during the morning session and four cases will be heard in the afternoon session. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask the judges questions after each session adjourns. For those who plan to attend, please note the following restrictions: Security •When oral arguments are scheduled, admittance to the courtrooms of the Nebraska Supreme Court and Nebraska Court of Appeals is permitted only upon compliance with security requirements. Before entering, guests are required to walk through a metal detecting device. No personal items, such as brief cases and purses, will be allowed in the court room. Entering and Exiting the Courtroom •Entry and exit are limited to before and after the court session, when a recess is taken by the court, and between cases when attorneys are changing places. Restrictions •Under no circumstances is food or drink to be taken into the Courtroom. Hats and caps must be removed. •Except for assigned oral arguments, silence shall be maintained at all times during the court session. No photographs or recordings of court proceedings are allowed except as provided by Supreme Court Rule 17. All cellular telephones and pagers must be turned off. The Nebraska Court of Appeals is the state’s intermediate appellate court. There are six judges who sit in panels or divisions of three judges each. The Court of Appeals seeks to provide Nebraskans with clear, impartial, and timely resolution of appealed orders and judgments as provided by law. The Court of Appeals is generally the first court to hear appeals of judgments and orders in criminal, juvenile, civil, domestic relations and probate matters. In addition, the Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction over decisions originating in a number of state administrative boards and agencies.
