As part of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s ongoing outreach and education efforts, Supreme Court Justices will hold oral arguments at Omaha South High School, on March 30, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. The high school court session is held in conjunction with annual Supreme Court arguments at the Creighton Law College. This visit is part of a continuing effort by the Nebraska Supreme Court and the legal community to raise awareness of court processes, and the importance of civics education to our society. “Our Court recognizes that the law is complex and can be confusing,” said Chief Justice Mike Heavican. “We want the students to understand the role of Nebraska’s highest court, and how the court system works to ensure that justice is served.” Omaha South Principal Mr. Ruben Cano stated, “This opportunity is providing the students of Omaha South a viable and real-life curriculum. It is taking what the students are learning in their classrooms and applying it to their lives.” According to Omaha South Career Education Supervisor Mr. Thomas Dickey, "Our students are studying Business Law, American Government, Economics, Law and Juvenile Justice, US History, Leadership, and the Military System. This is a great opportunity to allow all our students at Omaha South to explore the legal system and understand the career and opportunities they can participate in during high school, and after they graduate.” Thursday's argument at Omaha South will follow the Supreme Court’s oral argument session at the Creighton University School of Law at 9:30 a.m. For over 30 years, the Supreme Court has traveled annually to each of Nebraska’s law schools for the purpose of making the Court’s business accessible to students on their campuses. Justices spend time after the argument sessions talking to students about the appellate process and their career opportunities as lawyers. All argument sessions, whether held at the Supreme Court courtroom or outside of the State Capitol, are open to the public.
