November 23 Celebration Honoring Omaha Adoption Saturday

National Adoption Day will be celebrated at the Douglas County Justice Center on Saturday, November 23. Located at 1717 Harney Street in Omaha, the event will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, starting with a press conference in the first-floor conference room at 8:30 a.m. Adoption hearings will follow in the juvenile courtrooms on the second and third floors.

Judge Candice Novak will host this year’s event, with all juvenile judges participating in adoption hearings. A total of 41 children are scheduled to be adopted along with two guardianships. Families will check in on the first floor, where the court will provide child-focused entertainment, gift bags for the adopted children, T-shirts, family photos, refreshments, and flowers for parents.

This annual event highlights the efforts of policymakers, practitioners, lawyers, courts, and advocates who make adoptions possible, creating new and expanded families. Every November, National Adoption Awareness Month is celebrated across the United States.

While the main goal of National Adoption Day is a collective, grassroots effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States, it is also a day to finalize adoptions and to celebrate the children who have found their forever families.

Juvenile judges in Omaha join together annually on Omaha’s Adoption Saturday to reinforce the message of the need for foster-adopt families and to finalize adoptions for the children.

National Adoption Month in November also honors families that have opened their hearts and homes to children in need, as well as the volunteers and mentors who provide stability and support for children during significant life changes.
