2022 Clerks of the District Court Winter Conference
Nebraska’s Clerks of the District Court gathered for their annual winter conference on December 14, 2022, at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney.
Approximately 53 attendees participated in the one-day conference, which offered 4.75 hours of education.
This year’s speakers included District Court Trial Court Services Director Valorie Bendixen, NACO Executive Director Jon Cannon, Cedar County Clerk of the District Court Janet Wiechelman, and IT Applications Analyst Sue Nieto. Douglas County Court Judge Tom Harmon and Judicial Branch Public Information Officer Janet Bancroft conducted the main presentation on First Amendment Auditors.
The district courts are Nebraska’s general jurisdiction trial courts meaning that, with a few exceptions, civil and criminal cases of all types may be commenced in and tried by the district courts. District courts also function as appellate courts in deciding appeals from various administrative agencies and from most county court cases. Clerks of District Courts perform the administrative or non-judicial duties associated with the court, which essentially means everything a court does beyond trying cases. Their roles are essential to the court system, and their work is indispensable.
