The Bench Media Education work group led a reporting workshop on Nebraska's trial courts during the Nebraska Press Association convention in Lincoln on April 15, 2023. The workshop was coordinated by Bill Kelly, Senior Producer for Nebraska Public Media, with the assistance of newspaper reporter Austin Svehla of the Norfolk Daily News. Judges Jeff Funke, Leigh Ann Retelsdorf, and Todd Hutton contributed to the conversation. The workshop was attended by 35 reporters and editors from Nebraska newspapers. Topics covered in the workshop included: the importance of covering courts, both locally and occasionally nationally; court structure; how to locate and research court stories online; ethical considerations in identifying court participants; the use of evidence; and fair trial considerations.
