Cass County Adult Treatment Drug Court Celebrates Graduation

On May 15, 2023, the Cass County Adult Treatment Drug Court held a graduation ceremony at the Cass County Courthouse in Plattsmouth to celebrate the accomplishments of Laura. The ceremony, presided over by Judge Michael Smith, recognized Laura’s successful completion of the program. Also in attendance were Cass County Attorney Richard Feddee and Cass County Public Defenders Angela Minahan and Julie Bear.

The Cass County Adult Treatment Drug Court is an intensive program that combines comprehensive drug treatment, close supervision, and full accountability for its participants.  Following a team approach, the court brings together a judge, prosecutor, defense counsel, coordinator, community supervision officer, law enforcement, and treatment provider(s) to create a personalized program for each participant. Over the course of a minimum 18-month program, individuals in the Drug Court learn valuable skills to lead successful lives free from drugs and alcohol. Upon successfully completing the program, the charges are dismissed.

Adult Drug Courts offer an alternate path through the criminal justice system for nonviolent drug-related offenders, utilizing a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. The courts are designed to reduce recidivism and substance use among individuals with substance use disorders. In addition, the court aims to protect public safety and increase the participant's likelihood of successful rehabilitation by utilizing validated risk and need assessments, early and individualized behavioral health treatment, frequent and random chemical testing, incentives, sanctions, and other rehabilitative and ancillary services.
