Chief Justice’s Summer Tour Begins with County Court Visit, Highlighting Problem-Solving Court Success

County Court Judge Richard Smith opened the first stop of the Chief Justice’s Summer Tour in front of a packed courtroom on Monday, August 12, 2024, in Falls City.

Kicking off the tour, Judge Smith welcomed attendees and introduced Chief Justice Heavican. The Chief Justice thanked Judicial Branch staff for hosting breakfast and congratulated county commissioners on their preservation of the architecturally significant courtroom. He made a special point to thank county officials and the Falls City community for their support for courts and probation.

Following the Chief, Smith highlighted his county's unique problem-solving court, which operates within the limited jurisdiction court. Interspersed with his technical explanation, Smith explained the benefits of problem-solving courts, emphasizing their role in reducing recidivism, keeping families together, and saving taxpayer money. "People who go through this program are much less likely to commit crimes again," he said. The court helps support recovery as individuals remain at home rather than being incarcerated; which not only supports rehabilitation but also significantly reduces costs.

Following the Falls City visit, the Chief’s group continued to Auburn and Tecumseh before returning home.
