Douglas County Kids and Judges Celebrate Together
Douglas County Juvenile Court judges enjoyed spending non-court time with children assigned to their court during the 9th annual Kids and Judges Day on August 3, 2018. The judges answered questions, read stories, and took photos with the children.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Douglas County hosts the annual event at the Hall of Justice in downtown Omaha. This event, for foster parents and foster children, is a day filled with fun activities intended to help children feel more comfortable with the court environment and the judges themselves. All attendees and judges enjoyed a pizza and ice cream lunch.
The children observed a mock trial and had the opportunity to sit on the witness stand, and even the bench. All of these activities are designed to make the process more familiar and less intimidating.
The children also visited with therapy dogs and their handlers. The handlers explained how therapy dogs can help system-involved children.
Both children and foster parents were given important information by CASA and parents were offered continuing education credit for the event.
