Maureen Eck has been named Supreme Court Deputy Librarian of the State Law Library by the Nebraska Supreme Court. Eck has served as the Interim Deputy State Librarian since the retirement of Marie Wiechman in January 2018, and had served as the Library Technician/Assistant providing reference and referral services since April 2014.

Eck received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas Christian University, and will receive her Masters in Library Science degree from the University of North Texas in spring 2019. She is a member of the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, and Mid-America Association of Law Libraries.

As a new member of the Self-Represented Litigation Committee of the Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, she developed a forward-thinking plan to further assist individuals who represent themselves in the court system. Eck notes, “I love working with members of the public, particularly self-represented litigants, helping to connect them to the legal information they need.”

Before moving to Nebraska, she worked as a Digital Imaging Specialist for the Conservation Department at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

The Nebraska State Library, located on the 3rd floor of the State Capitol, is open weekdays and is the oldest public library in the state. In 1855 (before the territory of Nebraska became a state), Congress appropriated monies to the territory of Nebraska for library resources. In 1871, the Nebraska Legislature enacted a statute specifically relating to the creation of the Nebraska State Library. The Legislature named the Clerk of the Supreme Court as the librarian, and the judges of the Nebraska Supreme Court as the board of directors of the law collection. Since that time, the State Library has been staffed with professional librarians serving both the legal community and the public.
