A Problem-Solving Court graduation was held for Jonathan, Dean, Sandra, Edward, and Johnny at the Seward County Courthouse on March 18, 2024.  Judge James C. Stecker presided. District 5 probation staff, friends, and family of the graduates were in attendance.

Graduation is a time to celebrate the five graduate’s accomplishments. Dean, one of the graduates, said, “Thanks again for all your help and for the whole problem-solving court team having faith and trust in me. I couldn’t have changed my life without you.” Past problem-solving court clients and current problem-solving court clients shared their successes and the tribulations that come along with being involved in the program.

Problem-solving courts are an alternate route through the criminal justice system for nonviolent drug-related offenders. They utilize a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. The courts are designed to reduce recidivism and substance use among individuals with substance use disorders. The court’s goal is to protect public safety and increase the participant’s likelihood of successful rehabilitation by utilizing validated risk and need assessments, early and individualized behavioral health treatment, frequent and random chemical testing, incentives, sanctions, and other rehabilitative and ancillary services.
