Four Graduate from Sarpy County Wellness Court
On July 26, 2024, the Sarpy County Wellness Court celebrated the graduation of Dave, Crystal, Lydia, and Caprice at the Sarpy County Courthouse in Papillion. Sarpy County Wellness Court aims to stabilize, assist, and reduce the risk of future offenses for individuals with mental illness facing criminal prosecution. This ceremony marks the completion of an intensive program of comprehensive community supervision and full accountability.
Upon fulfilling the program’s requirements, which typically span a minimum of 18 months, the graduates had their charges dismissed. The graduation ceremony was presided over by Judge Stefanie Martinez, with retired Judge Robert Wester, and Tom Strigenz and Christopher Lathrop from the Sarpy County Public Defender’s Office also in attendance.
Wellness Courts are an alternate route through the criminal justice system for nonviolent drug-related offenders, utilizing a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. The courts are designed to reduce recidivism and substance use among individuals with substance use disorders. In addition, the court aims to protect public safety and increase the participant's likelihood of successful rehabilitation by utilizing validated risk and need assessments, early and individualized behavioral health treatment, frequent and random chemical testing, incentives, sanctions, and other rehabilitative and ancillary services.
