Eighty 4th grade students from Wysong Elementary from Lincoln travelled to the Supreme Court Courtroom on the final day of 2019 National Judicial Outreach Week (March 1-8).

Justice Stephanie Stacy greeted the group noting that usually people are not sitting on the floor of a courtroom. “They are sitting in seats in the gallery,” she said, “It is the public space that is open to everyone without having to call ahead or announce that they are coming.”

After reviewing the anatomy of a courtroom, including the bench, the bar, the well, and counsel tables she talked about judges and what happens in a classroom.

As usual, the question and answer period proved most interesting to the adults. 

Questions included:

• What happy cases come to the court besides adoptions?
• Isn’t there a secret entrance behind the bench (in the Supreme Court)?
• Do you have hammers (corrected to do you have mallets)? 

Concluding the tour, Justice Stacy reminded students to stay busy and pay attention in all of their classes. She noted, “No matter what you want to make better, no matter what you want to do, if you study hard you can be the person to make things better.  So study and work hard.”
