Inclusive Communities Training Underway Throughout the Judicial Branch
The Judicial Branch Inclusive Communities training initiative is off to a rapid start. The branch-wide initiative has been attended by almost 250 Judicial Branch staff across the state. The course provides basic awareness and understanding of inclusive language and terminology within the workplace. The initiative, driven by the strategic agendas of both the Supreme Court and probation, is designed to provide education to improve communication and relationships in the Branch. Judicial Branch Education currently has twenty-eight Inclusive Communities courses scheduled to take place before the end of the year.
As a way of planning for the future, the initiative includes training of internal staff who will provide education for new staff members joining the Branch.
Twenty staff participated in the first Inclusive Communities trainer-the-trainer sessions which was held on the 24th and 25th of July, 2018.
Another component of Inclusive Communities training is a provision for curriculum audits and the potential revision of lesson plans that do not meet the new language standard sets. For example, four weeks of the New Probation Officer Training curriculum has been audited for inclusive language. Audits will continue as new curriculum is developed and existing curriculum is reviewed.
