One positive outcome of the need for alternative operations in courthouses during COVID-19 has been a marked increase in the number of cases filed electronically by county and city attorneys. Criminal case filings have long been surpassed in the eFiling system by civil case filings, but this has changed starting in March of 2020. Electronic filing of criminal case complaints vs. traditional over-the-counter paper filing has steadily increased. Over the last 12 months, criminal cases are now on par with the levels of eFiling seen in other case types.*
