Career Law Clerk - Court of Appeals

Location:  1210 Golden Gate Drive, Papillion, Nebraska

District:  4th Judicial District

The Nebraska Court of Appeals, 4th Judicial District is accepting applications for a full-time Career Law Clerk. Career law clerks are hired at the discretion of the justice or judge. The law clerk is under the exclusive supervision of the justice or judge by whom they are hired and is an at-will employee. This position involves highly responsible legal work including legal research and analysis and assisting with the drafting of opinions. The office location is 1210 Golden Gate Drive, Papillion, Nebraska.

JOB DUTIES:

The experienced attorney in this position directly assists a Supreme Court justice or Court of Appeals judge with case specific duties such as analyzing and researching cases in the preparation of memoranda, reports, briefs, letters, legal opinions, and similar documents.  Assistance is provided in reviewing final opinions for accuracy, citation, format, grammar, and punctuation.  Assistance with supervision and training of law clerk interns or interns as needed. Daily communication with judges, other chamber staff, and Clerk's Office employees concerning legal and court-related issues.

REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an American Bar Association approved law school (top 10% of class preferred) and admission to the Nebraska State Bar Association, or eligibility therefore.  At least two years of law related experience.  

All educational credits must be granted from an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research including the use of Westlaw and LEXIS. Demonstrated ability to organize electronic material, to digest and abstract studies and opinions, to communicate clearly and concisely, and experience using word processing skills.

Physical Requirements

Law clerks must at times work varying hours and with some travel.  Normal office hazards are encountered, i.e., prolonged sitting, along with the stress derived from the complexity of legal research and the confidential nature of the work.

Salary Range: $73,430.28 - $106,349.12 per year

*Please note: Annual salary increases will occur July 1 each year. Amount to be determined.  Salary listed is current July 2024 salary year. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.
