Northeast Nebraska Adult Drug Court Celebrates March Graduation

Thursday, March 11, 2021

The Northeast Nebraska Adult Drug Court celebrated Adam Grunke and Ashley Jessen’s graduation on March 5, 2021, at the Madison County Courthouse. Judge James G. Kube presided. Following the graduation, each graduate offered words of encouragement to other participants in the program. Family and friends of the graduates were present to celebrate their accomplishments. News Channel Nebraska spoke with the graduates about their experience in the program.

Drug Court Coordinator Matthew McManigal remarked, “It utilizes a team approach, from the justice to the law enforcement to health professionals [...] that reinforcement is huge to implement change. We’re all very passionate about it.”

Adult Drug Courts are an alternate route through the criminal justice system for nonviolent drug-related offenders, which utilizes a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. The courts are designed to reduce recidivism and substance use among individuals with substance use disorders. The court’s goal is to protect public safety and increase the participant’s likelihood of successful rehabilitation by utilizing validated risk and need assessments, early and individualized behavioral health treatment, frequent and random chemical testing, incentives, sanctions, and other rehabilitative and ancillary services.
