Omaha County Court Judge Lawrence Barrett to Retire January 31, 2019

Judge of the County Court, 4th Judicial District, Lawrence E. Barrett, is retiring January 31, 2019.

In his letter to the Governor and the Chief Justice, Barrett wrote, “It has been my privilege to serve the citizens of Nebraska for over 24 years.” He continued, “I have had the greatest respect for the law and its unbiased application to all parties that appeared before me.” Barrett also expressed his appreciation for the county court support staff who, he noted, have enabled him to provide "efficient and timely service to the citizens of Douglas County" throughout his service as a judge.

Barrett has served on the Omaha bench from 1994 through his 2019 retirement. After taking the bench, Judge Barrett was retained in his position by area voters, most recently in 2016.

The first step in replacing Judge Barrett will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the county court for the 4th Judicial District.
