Viewers Quadruple for Supreme Court Ballot Arguments

Viewership of Nebraska Supreme Court arguments jumped four to five times the usual number for September’s ballot arguments.  Whether because of limited seating in the courtroom, or the inconvenience of congregating in the State Capitol, nearly 900 people watched Wednesday’s argument session from their desktop computer or mobile (phone or tablet) device.

Three ballot initiative challenges made their way to the Court’s September calendar: State ex rel. McNally v. Evnen (expanded gaming), State ex rel. Wagner v. Evnen (medical marijuana), and Thomas v. Peterson (appeal from district court regarding the language to be used on the ballot for a statutory initiative regarding delayed deposit services; preferring the statutory language to the common term: payday lending).

For those unable to watch the livestream, arguments are posted in the Court’s archive: https://supremecourt.nebraska.gov/courts/supreme-court/oral-argument-archive.
